Langtang valley

Seven hours of driving north of Kathmandu and you are at the trailhead — no flight, no acclimatisation week, and a glacier valley that gets a fraction of the Annapurna traffic for scenery that does not deserve to be second choice.

What the walking is like

A steady climb up one valley and back down it. You start in bamboo and langur forest along the Langtang Khola, break out into yak pasture around Ghodatabela, and finish at Kyanjin Gompa under a wall of ice at 3,870 m. Most people then spend a day going up Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri for the panorama, which is where the 4,984 m comes from.

It is a genuinely moderate trek — a week door to door, no pass to cross and no technical ground — which makes it the best short introduction to high Himalayan walking we sell.

The valley after 2015

The 2015 earthquake buried Langtang village and killed most of the people in it. The valley has been rebuilt since, largely by the families who survived, and the lodges you stay in are theirs. Trekking here is not disaster tourism — it is the main income of a community that chose to come back, and the memorial above the old village site is worth the ten minutes it takes to walk up to it.

Season and access

Autumn and spring are the clear windows, and the valley holds snow later than Annapurna. Winter trekking works to Kyanjin in a good year but the high viewpoints may not. The drive to Syabrubesi is long, rough in places, and the single biggest complaint we get about the trip — a private jeep instead of the local bus is money well spent.

  • Langtang National Park entry permit
  • TIMS card
  • Road access from Kathmandu — 6 to 8 hours to Syabrubesi

Langtang Valley FAQs

Yes. The trail was reopened, rebuilt and reassessed years ago, and the lodges are new construction. We still route around the old slide path above Langtang village, as everyone does.

Comfortably. Eight days including both drives is the standard trip, and a fit walker can trim a day. It is the only high valley in Nepal you can properly see inside a week's holiday.

Less infrastructure, fewer people, no flight and a shorter trip — but also no 5,000 m viewpoint unless you climb Tserko Ri, and fewer bail-out options mid-route. It is the connoisseur's short trek rather than the famous one.
