Lumbini is quieter than its status suggests. The Maya Devi temple stands over the marker stone and the pool where the Buddha is said to have been bathed; around it, a planned monastic zone holds a monastery from almost every Buddhist nation on earth, each built in its own architecture. Two days lets you walk it slowly, which is the only way it works.
How the two days go
- Day 1 — Arrive, Maya Devi temple and the sacred garden, Ashokan pillar at dusk
- Day 2 — The monastic zone by bicycle-rickshaw, the eternal flame, afternoon departure
Good to know
- Shoes off inside the Maya Devi temple, and no photography of the marker stone
- The Terai is genuinely hot from April; travel Oct–Mar if you have the choice
- It pairs naturally with Chitwan — they are on the same side of the country
